Whisky that make life worth living. The words can Stauning Whisky now put on three different bottlings. In the 2014 edition of the Whisky Bible, where the renowned whisky expert Jim Murray judge whiskies from around the world, there are top marks for more Stauning-bottlings. This shows that Stauning whisky can be compared with the world’s very best.
This time it’s a Young Rye (made on Danish rye) and the smoked version of the distillery’s single malt that gets 94.5 points out of 100 – a review that triggers the Whisky Bible Liquid Gold Award. Another Young Rye receives 92 points, while the non- smoked single malt gets 85 points. Two special editions that has matured in ex sherry casks have got 93 and 85 points. In contrast, a third Young Rye “only” got 77 points.
We are very, very proud of this year’s ratings. To get so good ratings from a man who has tasted whiskies from around the world, is something we can live high on the long, says Alex Munch, who is one of the nine friends who together started Stauning Whisky.
That we for the first time is down to 77 points shows that we still have a lot to learn. And as it says in the description, it is not easy to make good whisky. It’s still a fantastic bottle of rye, but this one stands out among all the other bottles Young Rye in Jim Murray’s rating. This also shows that Jim Murray tells his honest opinion – if you make a whisky that does not live up to his expectations, you get to know.
This years Whisky Bible has been eagerly awaited in Stauning. At the same time it is also a good opportunity to look back on the past year, which has seen several special editions.
We are especially very happy with the 93 points for the smoked single malt that has matured in Oloroso sherry casks, usually Jim Murray doesn’t like to mix smoke and sherry. But with this one he had to surrender, says Alex Munch.
